  • Gregorian vs Julian Calendar

The Gregorian calendar was created by Pope Gregory in 1528 CE to rectify the slipping ahead of the Julian Calendar which was the standard calendar of the Roman Empire and also the Catholic Church in Rome.

It is to be noted that the Eastern Orthodox Church in Greece and Eastern Europe still follow the Julian Calendar.

    Origin of the Julian Calendar

The Julian Calendar was introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE, it was the standard Roman Empire Calendar and was both used by the Roman State. It was used by Roman Catholic Church till 1528 AD.

Julius Caesar found that usage of several calendars in the Roman empire introduced several inaccuracies during his campaigns during the Roman Civil War.

    Roman Civil War
    Roman Civil War

A new calendar was introduced on the advice of Sosigenes, an Egyptian astronomer from Alexandria. He advised Caesar to use a solar calendar with 365 days and 6 hours length.

The calendar has 30 or 31 days usually but for February, it contained 28 days and in a leap year, 29 days. Because of confusion, the calendar was not established properly till 8 CE as Sosigenes had overestimated the actual length of the year by 11 min and 14 seconds.

Julius Caesar also had an idea that his calendar slipped ahead of time and added days to 46 BCE which took the total number of days in that year to 445.

    Inaccuracy of the Julian Calendar

The Julian Calendar had two inaccuracies which led to an error in calculations over time.

    1. Julian Calendar overestimates the length of a solar year by 11 minutes.
    2. The no of extra days for leap years is more in Julian Calendar.

    Let us understand in detail.

The Julian Calendar’s estimate of a solar year was fairly accurate at 365 days and 6 hours which is an overestimation by 11 minutes. These extra 11 minutes introduces an extra day every 131 years.

This caused the Julian Calendar to race ahead of time and miss the day for critical festivals. This overestimation would make solar and winter solstice to appear on different days over the years.

By the year of 1528 CE, the Julian Calendar was around 10 days ahead of the actual solstice events.

    #DO YOU KNOW?

The current Julian Calendar is 13 days ahead of Gregorian Calendar which will become 14 days by the year 2100 CE. This introduces separate Christmas days for the Roman Catholics (Dec 25) and Eastern Orthodox (January 7).

Why the Gregorian Calendar was Introduced?

The Gregorian Calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory in the year of 1528 CE to rectify the inaccuracies of Julian calendar which rectified the measurement of Solar Year from Julian Calendar’s 365.25 days to 365.24 days.

How the Gregorian Calendar Rectifies Julian Calendar’s Slipping Ahead?

Gregorian Calendar rectified the way in which leap years were added to the calendar. In Julian calendar, every fourth year was a leap year. However, in the case of Gregorian Calendar, the leap years were removed from those years which were divisible by 100. However, for years which were divisible by 400, the leap year would still exist.

Let me explain this with 3 examples.

    • The year 2024 would be a Leap Year because it is divisible by 4.
    • The year 2100 would not be a leap year as 2100 is divisible by 4 and 100.
    • The year 2400 would be a leap year because it is divisible by 4, 100 and 400.

As of December 2023, it has a sanctioned strength of 1,80,000 personnel.

  • What is Dicyanian (Dicyanin) Dye? William J. Kilner

The Dicyanian dye is a blue-coloured dye which is obtained from coal tar. The dye when coated on lens and weared as goggles gives you the power to see beyond the visible light spectrum.

It is believed that John Kilner, a British Medical Electrician used it to see beyond what is normal to the human eye and supposedly led him even to visualize human aura.

How Kilner made the Dicyanian Dye?

Kilner extracted the Dicyanian Dye from Coal Tar, a black substance that is a by product of coke and goal gas.

EChemi User Alexander Strong gave a suggestion to prepare Dicyanian Dye-

Dicyanin blue dye can be prepared by the action of KOH [potassium hydroxide] + atmospheric O [oxygen] on α-γ-Dimethylquinolinium salts.

Suggested Book: Dyestuffs and Coal-tar Products by Thomas Beacall

    Kilner’s Book: The Human Atmosphere?

Kilner published his book, The Human Atmosphere in 1911. It was one of the first texts to study the human aura and claimed that the aura of a human showed their energy field. Weaker aura would mean illness, stress or bad mood. Similarly, a stronger aura would indicate a healthy person.

Kilner also made dyed screens made from coal-tar derived substance called the “Dicyanian Dye“. The dye was then applied to the glass screens and a sensitive photographic plate captured an image through the screens.

Kilner recorded that long term viewing through the lens was not recommended as it could be harmful for the eyes.

He also recorded that on several occassions, Kilner and his associates were able to study the aura which extended several inches away from the naked human body and in several layers. He called them the inner aura (dotted lines) and the outer aura (dashed lines).

Kilner's Diagram of Human Aura Visible with Dicyanian Glass
Kilner’s Diagram of Human Aura Visible with Dicyanian Glass

    Challenges Faced by Kilner

The Dicyanian Dye which was used to coat the Kilner screens were very difficult to extract.

To mend this, Oscar Bagnall, a biologist suggested substituting the dye with pinacyanol which is a cyanian dye and used in electrophotographic plates.

    • IUPAC Name: (2E)-1-ethyl-2-[(E)-3-(1-ethylquinolin-1-ium-2-yl)prop-2-enylidene]quinoline;chloride
    • Common name: Quinaldine blue

    Kilner’s Glass

Kilner’s Glasses supposedly made it possible to see Human Atmosphere (Aura) through N-rays. He also proposed that studying the human aura could be helpful in medical cases.

#Note: N-rays were claimed to be discovered by French Physicist Prosper-René Blondlot but were later discovered to be non-existant.

In the case of Kilner it is highly probable that he saw some wavelengths of the UV light.

    Decoding Kilner’s Glass

If something is visible only via the Dicyanian Glass, it is highly probable that the dye introduces some kind of fluorescence that would change the wavelength of the original light and make it visible for the human eye.

Minerals containing elements like zinc, uranium, or certain rare earth elements, if present as impurities in coal, could potentially cause fluorescence. Additionally, some organic compounds or aromatic hydrocarbons found in coal tar or coal-derived products might exhibit fluorescence under particular circumstances.

The aura visible through the Dicyanian coated glass could be probably “Ultraviolet Light”.

He had another name Ranjodh Singh (possibly fake).

His father, Kulwant Singh Khukrana, was a known Khalistan Liberation Front terrorist and was instrumental in radicalization in India. His father was gunned down by security forces in 1991. His mother too was related to another Khalistani Liberation Front terrorist, Gurjant Singh Budhsingwala.

Aijaz was a key terrorist associated with the Islamic State Khorasan and was found dead in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. It is believed that he was killed by the Taliban Government.

Who are the Unknown Gunmen? An Intelligent Guess

The unknown gunmen might be the political or criminal rivals of the people who have been killed.

I have came to the conclusion after watching several podcasts and previous modus operandi of Indian intelligence in the Kashmir valley.

This is because almost all of those killed had a good exposure to the world of crime including drugs, weapons, terror, smuggling, guns for hire, etc. It would have been very easy for someone to tip off their rival gangs or criminals to do the job instead of hiring a gunmen through Indian Govt officials like the US suggests.

My Experience with India Post Payment Bank

IPPB officer helped me get back my ₹6,000 which I lost due to faulty transaction.

I have observed that major post office in India which is in a town has a person whether a postman or a clerk as an IPPB officer.

I have been using the India Post Payments Bank account since 2020 and have always found them approachable and helpful. Earlier the IPPB officer in my hometown was so helpful that we ended up becoming friends.
