    Criticism

Recently I saw some criticism on Instagram about using these Italian Switch words. My advice to those persons are, we all believe in something that might not be believed by others. Instead of criticizing what others believe, we should stick to our own faiths and beliefs.

Rest assured, chanting convalexa and proso-pyare has worked fine for my business and I am definitely going to stick to these switch words.

    1. Chronic Stress Causes Loss of Immunity

A research by Suzanne Segerstrom and Gregory Miller, which was done on more than 300 cases of stress, and was spread over 30 years, found that negative thought led to stress which then negatively affects your immune system.

Chronic Stress causes immunosuppression which is a condition of decreased immunity from diseases. People who think their lives are stressful are more likely to reduce their “killer cell” count that fights diseases.

    2. Positive Thinking Reduces Anxiety

A study done by the Kings College in London on 102 people who had generalized anxiety disorder found that positive visualization (similar to chanting switch words) could replace intrusive negative thoughts.

As per the report, random participants were asked to do one of three things:

    1. Visualize the positive outcomes to situations that worried them.
    2. Verbally describe positive outcomes to situations that worried them.
    3. Visualize positive outcomes to unrelated situations.

At the end of the study, all the three groups showed significant decrease in anxiety.

    3. Happiness Increases Success in Health, Professional Life and Relationships

The final research was done on 275,000 people to see if being happy influences heath, wealth and success. It was conducted by Sonja Lyubomirsky (University of California) and Laura King (University of Missouri). The study found that:

    1. Among 5000 people, those who were happy had better health and low levels of self-reported sickness.
    2. Happy people were less likely to engage in smoking, drinking, addictions, etc.
    3. Happy people had lower occurrence of cardiac stroke.
  • The Four Discourses of Leadership in the 20th Century

As per Simon Western, the four discourses of leadership that were prevalent during the past (20th) century were, Messiah, Controller, Therapist and Eco-leader. It was given by Western in 2013.

I will explain the topics in detail and also explain where I have encountered these four leadership styles. I will also try to help you identify these types of leaders in your real life.

    Controller (Early 1900s – 40s)

The Controller discourse of leadership emerged during the early 20th century when mass production was new.

Business leaders made all the decisions and followers (workers) did repetitive manual job. Standardization was the main goal and discipline was highly valued in this discourse of leadership.

    Example of Controller Leadership:

    • Narayana Murthy

    Therapist (1950s-60s)

The Therapist discourse of leadership emerged after the second world war when individualism became a trend. The focus of this style of leadership was to encourage individuals and attend to their personal needs.

The principle of this style of leadership was that happy workers are more productive.

    Example of Therapist leadership:

    • Anand Mahindra
    • Narendra Modi

    Messiah (1970s-1900s)

The Messiah discourse emerged during the 1970s and 80s when charismatic leaders started a trend of passionate leadership by creating larger than life figures who led organizations with a magical touch. The leader was often considered as a solution to all problems faced by the organization.

This style of leadership was adopted by several businesses, schools, colleges and non-governmental organizations.

    Examples of Messiah Leaders are:

    • Ratan Tata
    • Elon Musk
    • Bill Gates
    • Mark Zuckerberg

    Eco-Leader (21st Century)

The eco-leadership discourse became prevalent in the 21st century where leaders let experts handle their jobs by themselves. It is the latest among all the four discourses of leadership by Simon Western.

In this style of leadership the focus is on the leader becoming an enabler and a bit away from day to day decision making. Power is distributed among the lower levels of the organization and bottom-up decision making is encouraged.

    Example of eco-leadership:

    • Unilever

    Identify Your Leader

Each leader can have multiple attributed of leadership and can also follow multiple discourses. However, there is typically a dominant discourse as per my experience in seeing the corporate world.

To identify a controller leader, gauge the amount of orders that are sent directly by him or her. The more direct orders, the more the controller discourse is followed.

The therapist leader can be identified with whether they approach directly when workers face any issue.

To identify messiah leadership styles, simple ask your colleagues whether the leader is approachable or not. If no, he is a messiah leader.

To identify an eco-leader, see if they arrange for stuff whenever necessary or ask you to adjust with the existing resources.

  • 26 Dec 1704 – Aurangzeb’s Generals Executed Sons of Guru Gobind Singh

In the second battle of Anandpur fought between Sikhs and the Mughals, Aurangzeb’s generals Wazir Khan and Zaberdast Khan executed two children of Gobind Singh, the Tenth Sikh Guru. His son Ajit Singh was 17 years old (born 1687)and Jujhar Singh (born 1691) was 13 years old at their execution.

    Battle of Anandpur

The battle of Anandpur was fought between Sikhs and Mughals who wanted to arrest the rise of Sikhs. Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb dispatched his three governor-generals Wazir Khan(Sirhind), Zaberdast Khan(Lahore) and Dilwaar Khan(Kashmir) along with the governor of Peshawar to seize Anandpur forts.

The siege took place between May – December 1704.

    Their positions were:

    • Anandpur – Guru Gobind Singh
    • Fatehgarh – Uday Singh
    • Holgarh – Mokham Singh
    • Keshgarh – Ajit Singh
    • Lohgarh – Jujhar Singh

Each fort consisted of 500 men approximately.

    Mughal Treachery

The Mughals and their allied, the Hill Rajas swore oath on Quran and cows that if they surrender, they would be unharmed.

Running out of rations and provisions, the Sikh Guru and their men decided for peace but were treacherously attacked when they came out.

    Islamic Customs Followed by Mughals

It was a tradition during those times to force captives to accept Islam or face death otherwise.

  • Hanuman Chalisa Bhajan with Lyrics and Meaning in English

All of us have heard or read Hanuman Chalisa but only a few understand it line by line.

Hence, to help Bhagwan Hanuman’s devotees learn more about him, I have translated the Hanuman Chalisa in three languages, Hindi, English and Odia with the best of my knowledge of Awadhi and Hanuman Chalisa.

I have referred Gitapress Gorakhpur for the text and Shri Ramabhadra Acharya ji for the meaning. Whenever there is a conflict, all details have been provided.

    Hanuman Chalisa with English Translation

The chalisa contains two couplets in the beginning and two at the end. Rest(middle part) of the chalisa contains 40 lines or 20 chaupaayis.

    • Barnau Raghubar Bimal Jasu, Jo Daayaku Phal Chaari.

After cleaning the mirror of my heart with the dust of my guru’s feet.

About Bhagwan(God) Hanuman and Hanuman Chalisa

Bhagwan Hanuman is one of the seven eternals who have been blessed to serve the world for 4 Yugas which are Satya Yug, Dwapar Yug, Treta Yuga and Kali Yug.

He is considered a form of Bhagwan Shiv and is the son of Kesari(father) and Anjana(mother). The deva Pawan Dev (god of wind) is the biological father of Hanuman.

In his childhood, he was known to have been very close friends with Sugriva (later king of Kishkindha) and in his adult age, he assisted Shri Ram in tracking down Mother Sita and also helped him win the war.

The Chalisa is written in Doha-Chaupaayi form which means that there would be Doha which has two lines at the beginning and end, with all the verses in the middle written in stanzas of 4 lines called Chaupaayi.

    My Experience with Hanuman Chalisa

I have been reading Hanuman Chalisa since I was 5 years old and learnt it from my mother who used to recite it to me since I was born.

My experience with Hanuman Chalisa has been highly relieving and when I have some stress or fatigue. I use it as a form of meditation and it greatly helps to calm me down.

Hanuman Chalisa also removes problems of all kinds from your lives if you read it with complete devotion.

Since I have a very rich experience in Braj and Awadhi and grew up reading these literature since the last 20 years, I can definitely provide a much better translation.

    Hanuman Chalisa Origin

Hanuman Chalisa was written by Goswami Tulsidas around 1575 CE. It was written in a series of 40 verses and hence the name chalisa. The word Chalisa means 40 lines.

  • Thallium Poisoning Case of Zhu Ling, 1994-1995

Zhu Ling, a former student of the Tsinghua University in Beijing who got poisoned with Thallium in 1994 died on 22 December 2023, at the age of 50 reportedly due to brain tumor attack.

Though she was treated in 1994-1995 successfully, yet her poisoning remained unsolved. The state media also tried a coverup of her case.

    Thallium Poisoning Incident

In late 1994, Zhu Ling began to show strange signs and symptoms such as:

    • acute stomach pain
    • extensive hair loss

She was then hospitalized in the Beijing Tongren Hospital and her conditions improved gradually. Soon she was able to return to class.

However, a few months later in March 2023, she returned to the hospital with even worse symptoms than before. This time there were added symptoms of:

    • Loss of control over eye muscles
    • Pain in legs
    • Partial facial paralysis
    • Loss of ability to breathe properly

This time, she needed acute ICU care and was placed on a respirator.

A senior physician, Li Shun-Wei recalled a similar case that the physician treated in 1960s and was related to Thallium Poisoning. The physician strongly suspected that Zhu Ling was also suffering from the same kind of poisoning.

However, Zhu Ling denied any physical contact with Thallium or any of its compounds which was later confirmed by her university’s chemistry department.

Subsequently, she was given treatment for Guillain Barre Syndrome, a rapid onset of muscular weakness caused by deteriorating immune system. Still, her condition deteriorated rapidly.

    Successful Diagnosis

The successful diagnosis of Thallium poisoning was made possible via the internet when two of her fellow students Cai Quanqing and Bei Zhicheng posted an SOS message on Usenet (an early form internet developed from Unix-Unix communications).

The message contained symptoms of Zhu Ling and saw users responding within hours. They received more than 1500 responses out of which about 500 pointed towards Thallium Poisoning. The responders also suggested the usage of Prussian Blue as an antidote.

Prussian Blue acts an ion exchange agent and absorbs the metallic Thallium ion.

The medicine has been hailed as one of the most important medications by the World Health Organization (WHO).

    IUPAC Name: Iron(II,III) hexacyanidoferrate(II,III)

    Prussian Blue
    Prussian Blue

Tests done on Zhu Ling confirmed that she had severely high levels of Thallium in her body, at least 10,000 times higher than usual levels of 5-10 parts per billion.

Note: In the human body, Thallium is most abundantly present in the human hair in the above mentioned quantities.

    Investigation

The prime suspect as declared by the police was claimed to be Sun Wei, a classmate of Zhu Ling at Tsinghua University from 1992-1997. The university also confirmed that Wei could be the only student who had access to Thallium compounds.

However, in a statement released by Wei, she claimed her innocence in 2005, when the media finally got the information about Wei being a suspect.

As per Police reports Wei was detained and questioned on April 2, 1997. She also signed a document acknowledging that she was a suspect. Eight hours later, her parents retrieved her from the police.

Sun Wei’s grandfather Sun Yueqi was a senior and important member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee. Further, Sun Fuling, the deputy Mayor of Beijing from 1983 to 1993 was her first cousin, once removed.

    State’s Attempt to Hide Information

Police caused a lot of delays in disclosing information and began investigations as late as May 1995.

The information was finally revealed to the media as late as January 2006, more than 10 years after the case.

Li Shushen was the primary investigator and has been quoted (unverified) by the Southern People Weekly to have claimed that the information is too sensitive for the public.

Zhu Ling was a sophomore candidate at the Tsinghua University, Beijing when the incident occurred. She was an undergraduate student in Physical Chemistry. She majored as a Class 2 Student.

Her classmates described her as attractive, intelligent and talented.

Ling had an interest in music.

Hair Sample Analysis Results in 2018

Her poisoning pattern was later confirmed by a report released in 2018. Her hair sample was collected during the poisoning period and was sent to Richard Ash (Univ of Maryland) by her parents, that Zhu Ling had repeated exposure to Thallium for a period of at least 4 months. The doses were increased both in quantity and frequency.

Also there was at least 2 weeks of repeated ingestion by an elevated amount of Lead in her body.

Aftermath and Later Death in Dec 2023

Zhu Ling was saved from her poisoning. However, her eyesight, intelligence and senses were permanently damaged.

In an interview her parents confirmed that Zhu Ling had to be hospitalized once every year after the incident. Further, in 2011 after contracting a flu, Zhu was hospitalized for over 10 months which also impaired her ability to eat food due to a lung infection. Since then she could only be fed liquids.

  • 5 Shocking Facts About Christmas Day

Do you know that Christmas is celebrated on two days across the world. Or did you know that the date of birth of Jesus was not finalized until 221 CE. Or that Christmas became a major Christian Festival only after the 9th century

    1. Dec 25 was a Roman Solstice Festival

Do you know that the day of Dec 25 every year was actually a Roman Festival names ” The Day of the Sun Reborn”. This festival marked the day of Winter Solstice when the sun was considered to have reborn as from this period, the days would get gradually longer till the Summer Solstice on June 21.

The original name of the festival was “dies solis invicti nati” which translated to the Day of Birth of the Unconquered Sun.

Sometimes I have heard arguments that early Christians differentiated themselves from Romans and would not appropriate a day meant for a Roman festival as Christmas day. However, the Council of Nicaea appropriated many such dates.

    2. Two Christmas Days – Jan 7 and Dec 25

Diff between Gregorian and Julian Calendar
Diff between Gregorian and Julian Calendar

You might be surprised to know that the world celebrated Christmas on two different days. For Eastern Orthodox Christianity the day of the Christmas is not December 25 but January 7 every year.

The reason for the 13 day shift was that of use of Calendars. Roman Catholics follow the common Gregorian Calendar while the Eastern Orthodox Church follows the Julian Calendar which is currently 13 days ahead.

    3. Dec 25 was Assumed to be the Birth of Jesus by Sextus Julius Africanus

    Sextus Julius Africanus
    Sextus Julius Africanus

Earlier, the birth day of Jesus was never identified until 221 CE when Sextus Julius Africanus, the traveler and an early Christianity follower identified the Jesus’s birth date on Dec 25.

Sextus also had a significant influence on the famous early Christian historian, Eusebius who is famously known as the author of

    • Biography of Emperor Constantine
    • Biography of Emperor Augustus
    • History of the Church
    • On the Life of Pamphilus
    • Chronicle
    • On the Martyrs

    4. Christmas Celebrations Started After 9th Century

25th December was celebrated as Christmas day since 336 AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Constantine.

Further Till the 9th Century, Christmas was not even a major Christian Festival. The traditions of gifting within families was established much later in the 18th century.

The major Christian festivals before that era were Good Friday and Easter.

    5. Christians Initially Opposed the Celebration of Jesus Birth

Early Christians opposed the celebrations of any martyr’s birthday as the focus was on their death and sacrifice and not on their birth.
