  • Thallium Poisoning Case of Zhu Ling, 1994-1995

Zhu Ling, a former student of the Tsinghua University in Beijing who got poisoned with Thallium in 1994 died on 22 December 2023, at the age of 50 reportedly due to brain tumor attack.

Though she was treated in 1994-1995 successfully, yet her poisoning remained unsolved. The state media also tried a coverup of her case.

    Thallium Poisoning Incident

In late 1994, Zhu Ling began to show strange signs and symptoms such as:

    • acute stomach pain
    • extensive hair loss

She was then hospitalized in the Beijing Tongren Hospital and her conditions improved gradually. Soon she was able to return to class.

However, a few months later in March 2023, she returned to the hospital with even worse symptoms than before. This time there were added symptoms of:

    • Loss of control over eye muscles
    • Pain in legs
    • Partial facial paralysis
    • Loss of ability to breathe properly

This time, she needed acute ICU care and was placed on a respirator.

A senior physician, Li Shun-Wei recalled a similar case that the physician treated in 1960s and was related to Thallium Poisoning. The physician strongly suspected that Zhu Ling was also suffering from the same kind of poisoning.

However, Zhu Ling denied any physical contact with Thallium or any of its compounds which was later confirmed by her university’s chemistry department.

Subsequently, she was given treatment for Guillain Barre Syndrome, a rapid onset of muscular weakness caused by deteriorating immune system. Still, her condition deteriorated rapidly.

    Successful Diagnosis

The successful diagnosis of Thallium poisoning was made possible via the internet when two of her fellow students Cai Quanqing and Bei Zhicheng posted an SOS message on Usenet (an early form internet developed from Unix-Unix communications).

The message contained symptoms of Zhu Ling and saw users responding within hours. They received more than 1500 responses out of which about 500 pointed towards Thallium Poisoning. The responders also suggested the usage of Prussian Blue as an antidote.

Prussian Blue acts an ion exchange agent and absorbs the metallic Thallium ion.

The medicine has been hailed as one of the most important medications by the World Health Organization (WHO).

    IUPAC Name: Iron(II,III) hexacyanidoferrate(II,III)

    Prussian Blue
    Prussian Blue

Tests done on Zhu Ling confirmed that she had severely high levels of Thallium in her body, at least 10,000 times higher than usual levels of 5-10 parts per billion.

Note: In the human body, Thallium is most abundantly present in the human hair in the above mentioned quantities.

    Investigation

The prime suspect as declared by the police was claimed to be Sun Wei, a classmate of Zhu Ling at Tsinghua University from 1992-1997. The university also confirmed that Wei could be the only student who had access to Thallium compounds.

However, in a statement released by Wei, she claimed her innocence in 2005, when the media finally got the information about Wei being a suspect.

As per Police reports Wei was detained and questioned on April 2, 1997. She also signed a document acknowledging that she was a suspect. Eight hours later, her parents retrieved her from the police.

Sun Wei’s grandfather Sun Yueqi was a senior and important member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee. Further, Sun Fuling, the deputy Mayor of Beijing from 1983 to 1993 was her first cousin, once removed.

    State’s Attempt to Hide Information

Police caused a lot of delays in disclosing information and began investigations as late as May 1995.

The information was finally revealed to the media as late as January 2006, more than 10 years after the case.

Li Shushen was the primary investigator and has been quoted (unverified) by the Southern People Weekly to have claimed that the information is too sensitive for the public.

Zhu Ling was a sophomore candidate at the Tsinghua University, Beijing when the incident occurred. She was an undergraduate student in Physical Chemistry. She majored as a Class 2 Student.

Her classmates described her as attractive, intelligent and talented.

Ling had an interest in music.

Hair Sample Analysis Results in 2018

Her poisoning pattern was later confirmed by a report released in 2018. Her hair sample was collected during the poisoning period and was sent to Richard Ash (Univ of Maryland) by her parents, that Zhu Ling had repeated exposure to Thallium for a period of at least 4 months. The doses were increased both in quantity and frequency.

Also there was at least 2 weeks of repeated ingestion by an elevated amount of Lead in her body.

Aftermath and Later Death in Dec 2023

Zhu Ling was saved from her poisoning. However, her eyesight, intelligence and senses were permanently damaged.

In an interview her parents confirmed that Zhu Ling had to be hospitalized once every year after the incident. Further, in 2011 after contracting a flu, Zhu was hospitalized for over 10 months which also impaired her ability to eat food due to a lung infection. Since then she could only be fed liquids.

Effect of Thallium on Human Health

    Thallium Metal
    Thallium Metal

Thallium and its compounds are extremely poisonous for humans. Since the element and its compounds are highly aquaphillic (water soluble), they are always treated with utmost care.

On skin contact, Thallium compounds are rapidly absorbed.

  • The Saga of Unknown Gunmen: US, Canada, UK, Czechia, PoK and Pakistan

In the year 2023, several unknown gunmen have been reportedly killing terror outfits and their leaders all over the world. This led to the worsening of relations between India and Canada along with a diplomatic confrontation between India and USA.

    Avtar Singh Khanda

He was a Pakistani Sikh Separatist in the United Kingdom. He died in Sandwell Hospital, Birmingham due to Stage-4 blood cancer on 15 June 2023. His cancer was sudden because a few months prior in March 2023 he actively took part in violent protests against Indian Embassy. As per my knowledge of chemistry, this usually happens after Polonium poisoning.

He had another name Ranjodh Singh (possibly fake).

His father, Kulwant Singh Khukrana, was a known Khalistan Liberation Front terrorist and was instrumental in radicalization in India. His father was gunned down by security forces in 1991. His mother too was related to another Khalistani Liberation Front terrorist, Gurjant Singh Budhsingwala.

Aijaz was a key terrorist associated with the Islamic State Khorasan and was found dead in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. It is believed that he was killed by the Taliban Government.

Who are the Unknown Gunmen? An Intelligent Guess

The unknown gunmen might be the political or criminal rivals of the people who have been killed.

I have came to the conclusion after watching several podcasts and previous modus operandi of Indian intelligence in the Kashmir valley.

This is because almost all of those killed had a good exposure to the world of crime including drugs, weapons, terror, smuggling, guns for hire, etc. It would have been very easy for someone to tip off their rival gangs or criminals to do the job instead of hiring a gunmen through Indian Govt officials like the US suggests.

  • Dawood Latest Poisoned by The Infamous Unknown Gunmen

Dawood Ibrahim, the infamous gangster turned terrorist has reportedly been poisoned in Karachi. Though Pakistan denies that Dawood is present on its territory, yet during many occasions he was spotted being present in the country.

It is unknown who might have poised them but it has been alleged the NSA Ajit Doval might know who were the people involved.

    Dawood’s Terror History

Dawood started stealing in an early age, probably during his teens. By the age of 25 he had his own gang with his brother Shabir Ibrahim.

    Initial Crimes

Dawood rose in the world of crime with his smuggling, extortion and drug trafficking.

He then went to Dubai in 1986 after being wanted by the Mumbai Police for the murder of Samad Khan.

    1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts

Dawood became a designated terrorist in India after 1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts which killed more than 257 people and injured about 1400 more.

The bombings took place on 12 March 1993 and involved a series of 12 blasts between 1:30 PM and 3:40 PM.

    The attacked locations were:

    1. Mahim Fisherman colony
    2. Zaveri Bazaar fort
    3. Dadar’s Plaza Cinema
    4. Katha Bazaar
    5. Hotel Sea Rock
    6. Terminal at Sahar Airport

Sharad Pawar, then CM of Maharashtra lied that there were 13 blasts which later he told himself that he lied on purpose to mislead people that the terrorists could be from LTTE.

    US Designated Terrorist

On October 16, 2003, United States Government designated Dawood Ibrahim as a terrorist Executive Order 13224. The different departments including Department of Treasury soon began rolling out press releases.

The press release by Department of Treasury also said that Dawood was in relation with Al Qaida, having supported them and other terrorists in India.

    Sightings in Pakistan

Pakistan has disclosed the home address of Dawood as White House, Near Saudi Mosque, Clifton, Karachi.

  • USA Sent Naval Fleet in 1971 and Flimsy Evidence in 2023 Against India

For the most part of the history, USA has acted against the interests of India, be it in 1971 when it sent nuclear ships to India or in 2023 when its trying to push a false narrative against Indian government.

USA Sent Naval Fleet Against India in 1971

USS Enterprise with its Carrier Strike Group of USA
USS Enterprise with its Carrier Strike Group of USA

On 14 December 1971 Task Force 74 (Navy Ships of USA + UK + Australia) containing the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and its entire seventh fleet, were ordered to intimidate and possibly also attack Indian positions along the Bay of Bengal. This happened despite USA’s earlier commitment to human rights which its ally Pakistan was grossly violating in Bangladesh.

Despite all, the USS Enterprise crossed Malacca straits between the night of 13 – 14 December, 1971 and entered the Bay of Bengal on 15th. The carrier strike group was asked to proceed slowly at the speed of 15 knots to conserve fuel.

According to a book by Blechman and Kaplan (ISBN 0-8157-0985-4, page 188), the US Government was proceeding to evacuate Pakistani Forces. Evidence also suggests that the US Navy was also tasked to target Indian military facilities.

At that time, the Soviet Naval Force with a nuclear ballistic missile submarine arrived to fulfil its end of the Soviet-India Friendship Treaty signed on 9 Aug 1971. The standoff is supposed to have prevented US interference in the war.

USA Sent Flimsy Evidence Against India in 2023

    Designated Terrorist Pannun, USA Citizen
    Designated Terrorist Pannun, USA Citizen

Though on a much smaller scale, India and USA are still going through a standoff as of 15 December 2023. The US Government alleged that Indian Government used a person named Nikhil Gupta (alleged drug dealer) to allegedly hire a hitman against Pannun, a designated terrorist by Govt of India.

The evidence and the arguments supplied by the US Govt appear to be flimsy.

    1. It was alleged that CRPF was involved in the incident, which is a Police Force in India and primarily operates against Naxals, Crowd Control and in election duties.
    2. It was alleged that a total of $100,000 was to be paid for the attempt on Pannun. Why a cash-trail when untraceable crypto mixers are available?
    3. The same gunmen was allegedly hired which did a similar successful attempt on Nijjar. Why would someone leave a trail?
